چکیده

Abstract Introduction Titanium-based fracture fixation devices often necessitate removal in the maxillofacial region. Resorbable composite implants negate need for a revision operation; however, concurrent either possess prolonged degradation profile or bioactivity, resulting undesirable bone deposition. To that end, novel, fast-resorbing, non-bioactive material is proposed, which still possesses an osteoinductive potential, thereby aiding healing. Method Three bioglasses were available (NCL1-3) as filler material. NCL2 was selected and different concentrations (5%; 20%) added to reinforce medical grade poly(lactic-co- glycolide) (PLGA). The final compression moulded samples underwent characterisation 8-week assay. Results No significant difference found between cytotoxicity of glasses both positive (apatite wollastonite) negative (absence glass) controls relation mesenchymal stem cells osteoblasts. pH weight change analyses showed increased rate with increase glass concentration. Although reinforcement did not mechanical properties polymer, no present composites, and, made, 5% 20% composites had flexural strengths 13MPa±5, decrease significantly during degradation. Conclusions NCL1-3 are non-toxic context PLGA/NCL2 suitable produced currently, due polymer lower properties. However, compositions recommended future research, they would hypothetically provide superior response without lowering composite.

The 19 International Conference on Composite Materials Biomechanical Properties of Resorbable Composite Bone Fracture Repair Plates

Current bone repair implants for use within the body are made from metals [1, 2], which have disadvantages such as stress shielding and can remain in the body permanently. In addition, a fractured bone fixated with a metal plate may re-fracture upon removal of the implant [3].This is due to the fact that bone does not carry sufficient load during the healing process. Recently, a move towards de...

Fracture Problems in Composite Materials

In this paper a series of fracture problems in composite materials are identified, their methods of solution are briefly discussed, and some sample results are presented. The main problem of interest is the determination of the stress state in the neighborhood of localized imperfections such as cracks and inclusions which may exist in the composite. Particular emphasis is placed on the evaluati...

Use of resorbable implants for mandibular fixation: a systematic review.

Titanium plating is recognized as the criterion standard for the treatment of mandibular fractures and osteotomies. Use of resorbable implants is well documented in the literature for a range of craniofacial fractures. However, no clear review exists of the use of resorbable implants on the mandible. In this systematic review, we searched MEDLINE/PubMed and the Cochrane Database for studies of ...

Phase Field Modeling of Fracture and Composite Materials

The phase field method is a very powerful numerical method to solve moving boundary problems. Here we demonstrate how it can be applied to various processes involving sound propagation and fracture. This approach is related to a new theory of fracture which describes in particular the fast growth of cracks. We study the propagation of elastic waves, the determination of stress intensity factors...
